My name is Xiao Ma. I am a computer scientist, a hacker with 20 years experience, an active runner and a happy husband/father. I'm currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in computer science at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My advisor is Prof. Yuanyuan (YY) Zhou. I moved to the SysNet group in University of California at San Diego after YY joined UCSD.

My research interest is to make computers easier to use and program, in particular to make mobile devices more reliable, efficient and secure.

During my Ph.D. study, I took a temporary leave to work on a start-up company, Pattern Insight, where we provide solutions to efficiently analyze system data, including source code, logs, scripts, etc. The company started as a spinoff from our research group. The biggest lesson I learned from this experience is to build things that are useful.

Before I came to University of Illinois, I got my bachelor's degree in computer science from Zhejiang University with the highest honor of the class of 2004.

I tweet and occasionally blog when what I want to say is more than 140 characters. I can be reached at "x1ma at cs dot ucsd dot edu".
